Article: Are Truffles Mushrooms?

Are Truffles Mushrooms?

No truffles are not mushrooms, but they are both fungi.

Truffles and mushrooms belong to the same biological kingdom (Fungi), but they grow and develop very differently.

Mushrooms: Typical mushrooms (like button or portobello) grow above ground and produce visible caps and stems. Many edible varieties belong to genera like Agaricus.

Truffles: Truffles grow underground and form a symbiotic relationship with tree roots (like oak and hazelnut). They belong to the genus Tuber, which is different from most common culinary mushrooms.

Because they grow underground, truffles rely on animals (and trained dogs!) to help spread their spores.
